About the country

The Republic of Uganda, with its capital Kampala, ranks 159th out of 183 in the Human Development Index. Although Uganda has developed into a stable economic and political force in East Africa over the last two decades, it remains one of the poorest countries in the world. Above all, Uganda has suffered decades of brutal civil war and unrest with subsequent refugee movements. Also radical Islam, which is spreading from northern Africa across the continent is a challenge in Uganda. Just recently, 42 students were killed by Islamist terrorists in an attack on a school.
