About the country

The Republic of Uganda ranks 159 out of 183 on the Human Development Index. Although Uganda has emerged as a stable economic and political force in East Africa over the past two decades, it remains one of the poorest countries in the world. In particular, Uganda has suffered from decades of brutal civil war and unrest, with subsequent refugee movements. Radical Islam, which is spreading across the continent from North Africa, is also a challenge in Uganda. In 2023, 42 students were killed by Islamist terrorists in an attack on a school.
